Magic Junk Radio 13: Hiding As Noise
For anyone who thought Magic Junk Radio had a definitive sound, prepare yourself. What lies behind the download link below is something completely different.
If you’ve never listened to Magic Junk Radio before, this is NOT the quintessential episode to start with (we highly recommend Episodes #8 through 12 for our bread and butter). No, this episode is our black sheep. The one that doesn’t look, or in our case sound, like the rest.
This is our first big experiment, a litmus test of where our remixing skills are at, to see how far we can push a group of nearly 100 samples. This is our DJ mix on acid. Or at least, that’s what we’ve heard. Now you can decide for yourself.
Thus, Magic Junk Radio 13: Hiding As Noise is piece of sonic art. No host segments, no singles, no breaks. This also marks the first time we’ve opted to use songs as most DJ’s do— by playing them instead of clipping a sample. Clocking in at an overindulgent 44:44, MJR 13 is best listened to on headphones, to savor the full range of sound that will no doubt rattle through your brain.
If this experiment is not your slice of pie, then fear not— Magic Junk Radio #14 will be released within a month from this podcast, where you’ll find M. Sahm and S.Rod up to their usual remixing tricks.
If you do enjoy this episode, be sure to leave us a comment if you have twenty seconds to spare. Cheers.

I’m not sure if I wish I’d read about #13 before listening to it so I could be forewarned of the new style or if I’m glad I went into it with no idea what was to come.
I admit: I miss the banter and host segments. Even before I’d gotten to know either of you over comment threads and e-mails, I felt like I had an “in” because of the show banter. Like it or not, you two are part of the ‘the show,’ as it were. So yeah, I missed that.
Now let’s talk about what’s here: First, that’s damn fucking impressive to hold the thing together for the 44 minute run without “taking a breath.” I love the slow build. At first, thinking this would be a regular episode, I was waiting for it to ‘kick in.’ Once I got with what you were doing, I liked that a lot. I like the way you changed things up between some harder, rock sounds, ambient sounds, and the beats. To do all that in one sweeping arc and never drop it or make it feel like it’s going to crash is really impressive.
It’s tough to be more specific because it’s all one “song.” I do remember making a note of liking the rock ‘bit’ around the 20 minute mark.
Great job as always, kids. Love it. I hope you’re not teasing about a quick return on 14.
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this. This was the perfect remedy for a long week (already). I love the slow build, like a candle with incredible aroma – no, that’s not it.
This reminded me of the best steak I’ve ever had. It’s texture, taste, seemingly endless array of spices I would have never thought went together, made that piece of meat unforgettable.
Episode13 was that steak for me, only in a kaleidoscopic soundscape.
Very impressive. Looking forward to more.
Thanks for the kind words, guys… we weren’t sure how this episode would play since it was such a break from “tradition”… although if you dig back far enough, you’ll find that Episode #3 didn’t have any host segments either.
The host segments will definitely be back, as the music for #14 is already 95% done.
We appreciate the support. Cheers.
